In the Flesh is a BAFTA-award-winning series about zombies. Nominally. It’s set after the Rising, when Partially Deceased Syndrome (PDS) sufferers have been medicated and effectively function like normal people; however, they face a lot of discrimination from the living and pressure to conform to the living’s standards. It deals with intolerance/oppression, depression, self-image/self-acceptance, guilt, suicide, PTSD, and a whole lot of other serious topics, but it has lots of light and sweet moments too. There are canonically queer characters whose sexualities are never made into jokes (hell yeah, goodbye gross queerbaiting and bad representation) and well-written female characters who have their own, equally touching story arcs. The character development is phenomenal. You’ll be laughing one moment and crying the next. Or, in the case of some episodes, crying the entire time (season 1 finale I’m looking at you). I would marry this show if it were a person.
